Newman University

Project Name:  New Student Residences and Extension to Teaching Block
Location: Birmingham
Client: Newman University
Net Value: £7,500,000.00

The client requirement was for a masterplan for its future on-site, student residential accommodation, with the project delivering the first phase of 100 rooms, in time for the start of the following academic year.

Tandem took this project from outline brief through to operation. We pulled together the brief for the project, procured the professional team, negotiated the engagement of the contractor through a mini-tender using the CWM Framework and managed the detailed design and package procurement in conjunction with the appointed contractor. Once on site, we managed and administered the NEC contract and the subsequent fit-out of the spaces ready for occupation.

Project Challenge

Our Response

Too tight a programme for traditional procurement strategies

Use of established contract and 2-stage procurement to allow early contract.

Limited construction time

Tandem worked with the contractor to identify elements of the construction appropriate for prefabrication to reduce overall construction programme. We championed the use of the Local Authority’s framework and worked with the Local Authority and the University to make use of the framework (the first time it had been used in other public sector organisations) in order to speed overall programme.
