Newman University

Project Name:  School of Nursing and Allied Health
Location: Birmingham
Client: Newman University
Net Value: £3,200,000.00

The client required state-of-the-art teaching accommodation for the new curriculum area of Nursing and Allied Health Professionals. This includes a requirement for realistic hospital wards, a Physiotherapy treatment suite, a fully immersive simulation suite and other ancillary teaching accommodations.

The funding stream identified tight time restrictions on financial spending. Tandem quickly competitively procured a design team that was committed to developing a state-of-the-art design for the facility, on a fully designed “traditional” style of contract. We made a direct appointment of the main contractor on the basis of their reputation for quality and commitment, via the Pagabo Framework. With all team members working to a common goal, the facility was delivered on time and budget, with a high degree of quality.

Project Challenge

Our Response

Funding restrictions meant project needed to be fully delivered from feasibility to Practical Completion in 7 months

The design was taken to an advance stage to allow the contractor to deliver an open-book tender, whilst the design team completed the construction design to allow works to commence as soon as a price was agreed. Tandem then overlapped the procurement and installation of all specialist equipment (including extensive AV facilities) alongside the completion of the build and fit out by the main contractor.

University had insufficient resources to manage procurement of all furniture, equipment and specialist supplies to ensure operational readiness in shortest possible timeframe.

Tandem took control of all aspects of procurement, including working with staff and external advisors to determine requirements, establishing most competitive procurement routes, and overseeing all deliveries and installations.
