This project follows on from the refurbishment of the main auditorium and front of house areas in this Grade 2 listed theatre. This last phase has seen the refurbishment and expansion of the existing café / bar to create a destination venue with its own identity generating much needed additional revenue for the theatre.
Tandem have worked with the theatre since our inception and our people have delivered more than 10 projects for this client over the last 15 years. In this case, we first commissioned a detailed feasibility study to determine the best way for the theatre to generate additional revenue, and the works required to best achieve the aspirations. Using business analysts, we identified the most economically viable solution for the spaces the theatre had available was to extend and completely refurbish the existing bar and former restaurant spaces, including a complete kitchen replacement, to create a new stand-alone destination venue, linked but less dependent upon the theatre itself.

| The works included expanding into the two adjacent retail units, with additional former residential accommodation above. During the works, detailed investigation revealed a plethora of long-forgotten power supplies and meters. | We worked closely with the contractor and the network providers to identify the owners of these supplies and meters in order to arrange their disconnection and removal to allow the works to progress. |
| One of the key requirements of the project was that the bar/café could stand alone and be securable from the theatre to allow it to function when the theatre wasn’t open. | Careful security planning was required to ensure the café was able to utilise newly refurbished WC’s without compromising the security of the theatre. Lockable, glazed, sliding, security screens allowed areas to be separated from the theatre, whilst allowing the two spaces to always remain connected. |
