What got you into the Construction / Property industry?

I originally studied law and worked in finance which enabled me to develop certain skills which I found to be suitable for working in the Construction Industry.  I was drawn towards the diverse challenges that construction offers.  Having worked in construction for 8 years, I am extremely happy to have made the move!

Did you qualify first or later?

I decided to study at Nottingham-Trent University and obtained my master’s degree in quantity surveying while I was working for a Developer in Stratford-Upon-Avon.  This then allowed me to enter the construction industry with a solid knowledge base.

Is your experience best measured in years or number of projects?

A mix of both.  I would argue the number of years is probably the more important factor in terms of experience, but number and spread of sector experience is also essential as it broadens your experience within the sector.  I like the fact that at Tandem, we do so many different types of project.

Have you specialised in any particular sectors?

My career and experience to date has been across a wide range of items.  I have however spent time looking in detail of how the industry can be improved in looking at innovative ways.  This was part of the AIMCH Project

If you could have been involved in one project what would it be?

Marina Bay Sands, Singapore.

At what aspects of the role do you excel?

I really enjoy the process of producing estimates.  Taking a scheme and helping clients understand and set a realistic budget gives tremendous satisfaction.

What does ‘together we can…’ mean to you?

At Tandem there is a great Team spirit in helping each other and working together in delivering the best service to our clients. If there is anything we don’t understand – by speaking out, there is rarely anything the team cannot solve.

If you weren’t in your current role, what would you be doing?

Having been born and raised in Spain, I would probably be working as an Estate Agent in sunny Malaga.

When not working where would you be found?

Any outdoorsy activity!

What tunes would your personal radio station play?

All of them! I used to enjoy rap, moved to house and now I like listening to Liquid DnB! I am also influenced by my father who is a huge fan of the 70s and 80s 90’s music.

What can’t you live without?

Good food and Friends of course.

What’s the best piece of advice you could give someone?

Be respectful, always try to have a laugh with the person next to you.  Make the most of every day!
